The tournament has been traditionally held in January and February. This is causing disputes with European clubs who had to release players in the middle of the season. A change of timing that will be welcomed by European clubs, many of whom have lost players at vital periods of the season because of the time slot.

The changes were approved by CAF president Ahmad Ahmad, at a meeting of the Confederation of African Football in Rabat which adopted recommendations made at the two-day CAF Symposium in Morocco earlier in the week.

Africa’s flagship sporting event has featured 16 teams since 1996. The tournament will continue to be held every two years and exclusively on African soil.
